Betty Boop Film Festival
Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM (EDT)
Boop-Oop-A-Doop at the ToonSeum! Pittsburgh’s cartoon arts museum is putting its own spin on Pittsburgh’s jazz festival.
The ToonSeum will celebrate a jazz film icon with the Betty Boop Film Festival from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 2.
The festivities will begin with a beer and wine reception and a visit from Betty herself. Guests will be able to have their picture taken with her. An exhibition of rare, flapper-era illustrations by Faith Burrows will be on display in the ToonSeum’s Lou Scheimer Gallery.
Beginning at 8 p.m., the ToonSeum will screen classic animated shorts from the legendary Fleischer Studios featuring Betty Boop. ToonSeum Executive Director and Cartoon Historian Joe Wos will share trivia and historical facts about the animated siren. Wos is no stranger to jazz festivals: He performed as a cartoonist at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for three consecutive years.
“Betty Boop’s films are truly remarkable pieces of animation and jazz history. Widely regarded as the first use of jazz music in film, they prominently featured African American jazz musicians such as Cab Calloway and Louis Armstrong – a bold choice for mainstream films of the 1930s,” Wos said.
“Jazz and cartoons have gone hand in hand since the beginnings of the two art forms,” Wos added. “From ‘Jungle Book’ to ‘School House Rocks’ to ‘Peanuts,’ it really all began with Betty Boop!”
The screenings will feature a selection of Betty’s most popular cartoons. Guests also will have a chance to win a special gift basket of Betty Boop items courtesy of TMD Holdings.
This event is made possible with the approval and support of Fleischer Studios and King Features.
